For her part, it was Miri who actually prepared the plates the boys took out to Kavin. She would put the food they were having on the plate and cover it, and put it in the refrigerator where the boys could easily reach it.

At night, she stood against the wall next to the window with her eyes closed as she listened to Kavin sing to her, tears streaming down her face. She listened until she could stand it no longer, then she'd turn out the light, lie down and cover her ears with a pillow and weep.

Caylib lie awake those nights. He could hear his father singing and his mother crying. He, too, silently wept.

Kavin could feel Miri's pain as she wept after he stopped playing the music. His heart broke as he lie upon the blankets in his lean-to.

It was the fourth morning, just before getting into the landpseeder that Caylib dropped his homework. It was a science project he'd worked on for the past several weeks, and it broke.

"No no no no NO!" He screamed and kicked the pieces. He turned to his mother and screamed at her. "Why are you so mean! Why can't you let Daddy back into the house! It's your fault! All your fault!"

Kavin had rushed over as the outburst began. He grabbed Caylib's shoulders, a bit rougher than he meant to, and shook him. "I told you not to talk to your mother like that! Now apologize to her."

"NO!" Caylib cried as he pulled away. "It's your fault too!" He turned and got in the landspeeder's back seat and sat there arms folded, tears streaming down his cheeks, ignored.

Kavin looked at a stunned Miri. He reached out and gently touched her elbow. "I'm sorry.."

Miri slapped him. "You didn't have to hurt him, Kavin!" She yelled. She then got into the landpeeder and took off.

Kavin stood there, stunned. It was not so much the slap that stung him. Nor was it the anger in Miri's voice. It was the loathing and hatred directed at him from her that cut him to the core. There was no telling how long he stood there before he finally moved.

For the first time since he arrived home, Kavin went around to the back of the house where Seth's grave lie. He knelt down before the tombstone.

"Seth." His voice was shaky with grief. "I couldn't be there for you or your mother. I am so sorry. I'm so so sorry!" He broke down weeping.

He wept until he could no longer weep.

He then sat up and drew one of his lightsabers, ignighting it. He stared at the purple light, feeling numb and cold. I'm already dead, I might as well get this over with. He turned the blade around to point toward his midsection.

"KAVIN!"

He froze as he both heard the scream with his ears and within his soul.

Kavin's hands shook as he realized what he had almost done. He switched off the lightsaber and dropped it in one motion. He sat there, shaking. He closed his eyes as he felt Miri embrace him from behind.

"Oh, Kavin! I'm so sorry!" She wept as she held him.

He turned in her arms and returned her embrace, weeping with her. They held each other well past the time their weeping had stopped. Neither of them knew or even cared if it had been minutes or hours before they pulled away from each other and looked into each other's eyes.

"I love you." They spoke in unison.

They both laughed and hugged each other again.
